A flashback to a bold bank robbery gone wrong opens the game. Together with a third accomplice, Michael and Trevor find themselves in a desperate attempt to elude the authorities. Their getaway car is damaged as they make their way through the gun-riddled streets of Los Santos, so they must continue their escape on foot in the direction of an airplane that is waiting for them. But when a sniper's bullet kills their buddy and seriously wounds Michael, their plan is derailed.
Watching his closest friends perish during the mayhem forces Trevor to make a last-ditch choice. He exhorts Michael to escape, forgoing their years of friendship in favor of a shot at life, making the decision between survival and retribution. Their futures are defined by this moment: Michael arrives while pretending to be dead.
